YOUR FAQ'S, BEN'S FACTS.

DUETTI & AMODOMIO

STOCK VS CUSTOM VS BESPOKE… AND TAILOR-READY. WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

Most bicycles sold in stores and online are ‘stock’, meaning that they are shipped from the manufacturer with a fixed set of specifications in a limited range of sizes. This would be like buying your Levi 505 stonewashed jeans 32/32.

At the other end of the spectrum is bespoke. This is like going to a tailor shop to order a new dress or suit and nothing is prefabricated. You are measured for fit, select the fabrics and style and work commences. The aModoMio is a bespoke bicycle.

The Duetti falls in-between. Ben likes to call this tailor-ready. The eleven sizes of frames (and forks) are based on Ben’s 40+ years experience of designing thousands of bespoke bicycles. The Duetti frames are indeed pre-designed and crafted by true artisans, but awaiting your measurements before selecting which size is best for you and then assembling them with the proper ‘cockpit’ specifications. This is like going into a dress or suit shop that inventories clothing based on a single dimension (like chest size), then finishing the remaining details (sleeves, waist, etc.) to order. This is almost bespoke at almost stock prices.

Custom is a term that’s used in many different. Sometimes as a synonym for bespoke. Most often, custom or customized merely means you have the option to make any type of selection (color, wheel selection, etc.) on your new bike. It’s too confusing, so we try to stay away from using it.

DO YOU BUILD BICYCLES FOR WOMEN?

Of course! Throughout the years, I’ve designed and produced many bicycles for women, including the very highest levels of international competition. Having devoted countless hours and resources to understanding the human/cycle interface I long ago concluded that the best approach is to assume that everyone is in some way unique and establishing rules of thumb based on gender or age is misguided.

So we make bicycles for cyclists. I’m confident that we can build your bicycle, too.

WHY DON’T YOUR BICYCLES UTILIZE INTERNAL CABLE ROUTINGS?

First, for reasons of strength, durability and design integrity it's never a good idea to put holes in a tube.

Second, internal routing adds a level of complexity in assembly and preventative maintenance… and we're all about keeping things simple and well maintained.

ARE DUETTI AND AMODOMIO ROAD (PAVED) BIKES, OR ALL-AROUND BIKES, GRAVEL BIKES?

Both the aModoMio and Duetti  are designed as road bikes optimized for 90% of the riding, 90% of road cyclists engage in, which is to say, most of the time is on various paved surfaces. However, the tires and wheels provided are more than sufficient to handle other surfaces as well like the famed strada-bianca, mostly packed dirt and fine gravel. Over the years I’ve ridden alongside many cyclists on even poor quality dirt, dirt/gravel, even grass paths on nothing more than 20mm tubular tires. The 25mm tires that are standard (or 28 on request) on the wider HED rims are more than adequate for everything but the poorest off-road conditions yet will enhance your paved experience.

WHAT ARE THE LARGEST TIRES THAT A DUETTI OR AMODOMIO CAN ACCOMMODATE.

Both models are optimized around 25-28mm road tires. The Duetti and the disc brake aModoMio can handle some, but not all 32mm road tires. We’re beginning to create a list. However, clearance for debris is reduced. When using fenders, stay with the 25/28 size tires. Please note that there is tremendous variation brand-to-brand, model-to-model in measure circumference of tires.

DO YOU SHIP OUTSIDE OF THE US?

Absolutely! We’d love to share the fruits of our labors with cyclists everywhere. However, shipping rates and certain services will vary.

IS BRITISH STANDARD BRAKE ROUTING AVAILABLE?

Yes! All you have to do is ask and include in your comments. For those of us on the western side of the Atlantic, British normal is right hand/front brake; left hand / rear brake. Moto style.

OLDER SEROTTA BICYCLES (PRE-2014)

IS SEROTTA DESIGN STUDIO THE SAME COMPANY AS “SEROTTA” OR “SEROTTA COMPETITION BICYCLES"?

No. Serotta Competition Bicycles, “Serotta” which was sold to a group of investors in 2012. Along with the sale went all records, materials, tools and memorabilia. As such, we are unable to address questions regarding your older, but much loved bicycle.

Unfortunately, the company closed less than two years later and to my knowledge its purchasers have not responded to any inquiries of support of any kind.

WARRANTY, REPAIR, MANUFACTURING & SALES DETAILS OF MY OLDER SEROTTA?

We are not responsible for warranty or service on Serotta bicycles built prior to 2017, nor, sadly, as stated previously do we have any records or information regarding the more than 50,000 bicycles produced.

WHO CAN REPAIR MY ORIGINAL SEROTTA FRAME?

Although original replacement materials are no longer available, I generally direct repair and refinishing to the two shops listed below, each run by wise and competent master craftsmen. They have both agreed to track requests with the possibility of developing some specific replacement components in time. After all, Serotta produced more than 50,000 hand made frames during its run.
